Boccaccio - Don Sapino Kindergarten
This project assessed the energy performance of a single-story kindergarten of roughly 1,860 m² net floor area, built in two phases in 1997 and 2010. An hourly energy model was developed and calibrated in EC700 (Edilclima) using real climate data, actual occupancy patterns, and metered gas consumption. Calibration followed ASHRAE Guideline 14 and reached values well within the accepted thresholds confirming the model reliably reproduced the building's real behaviour.
In its pre-retrofit state the building was rated energy class G, with a non-renewable primary energy demand (EPgl,nren) of 437.6 kWh/m²/year. Three energy efficiency measures were studied: external wall insulation, upgrading windows from double to triple glazing, and replacing the gas condensing boilers and radiators with an air-to-water heat pump and fan coil emitters. These were combined into five scenarios and compared through a cost-optimal analysis based on global cost, Net Present Value, and discounted payback period. Final solution raising the building to class A4, and paying back in about 2 years.
